RESULTS – SDES #3 – Jacoby Creek – 2019-03-16

On March 16th there was an Escape From Jacoby Creek.

SDES #3

27 determined Pirate Riders descended through some of Humboldt County’s most obscure and scenic trails, from the upper reaches of Kneeland down to the sea level limits of the Jacoby Creek Watershed. Riders had the distinct privilege of associating with a few true MTB legends of our area, who reminded us all we can still be doing this in another 30+ years. Along the way five unique trails received the most traffic they have for some time. The competitive bar was leveled between locals and visiting riders on multiple stages, as many locals had little to no experience on various parts of the route. Blind riding was accented by the dense and lush foliage Humboldt County is known for, making every moment exciting and often unpredictable.  With trails freshly cleared and a warm sunny upon the Pirates, spirits were high. Times would be tight throughout the group as riders vied for position through the unexpected. In the end, the day would be had by a young local man, born and breed in the Creek, with a strong gut and a fast bike. He was even rumored to be filling his water bottle straight from the banks of the storm swollen Jacoby Creek throughout the day’s journey, perhaps this was some evidence of the dominant ride that was to come.

Stage 1 traversed and descended the storied John Dostal Trail. Stage 1 would be the most physical stage of the day, a proper and abrupt warm up for the escapees. In the Masters class Tony Lucchesi would capitalize on his Jacoby Creek roots, pulling a strong 2nd on the stage, with an apparently fit Rusty Hansen taking the win by 1 second despite riding the stage blind. The Senior Mens’ pace would be set by Reilly Hohman taking 3rd despite misjudging for a bit where the finish was and stopping on track. Raker extraordinaire Justin Graves finished 1 second up in 2nd and Creeker by birth Jimmy Lucchesi crossed the line another 3 seconds up in 1st.

Because Stage 2 shared a finish line with stage 1, riders had a rare chance to preview the stage with limited practice and a push up to inspect. This leveled the field out and saw times draw tighter at the top. On the mini DH run that is Homey Loamy, Shaun Fyfe would claim 2nd in the Masters field, with Mike Clem slipping under the 1 minute mark to take 1st. The fast Senior Men were showing themselves, with Graves slipping to 4th, Reilly Hohman would edge into 3rd just 0.3 up on Graves. A half second ahead of Hohman in 2nd place was Big Jim Lucchesi. And holding it wide was Vinny Kimber, storming to the stage win a whopping 3 seconds up on Lucchesi.

Stage 3 was the mythic Fern Trail. After a fierce bout of pedaling and tree dodging the trail descends rapidly down toward the Creek presenting the longest and, at points, highest speed stage of the day. Choked out at many points by, you guessed it, ferns, the pseudo blind run saw many visiting riders move themselves up solidly in the ranks. In Masters Rusty Hansen would ride into a smooth 2nd spot with Mike Clem carrying his momentum into another stage win. In Seniors Justin Graves would crash twice and fall way out of the top three while Steven Pearl would catch his 2 minute rider and be held up to fall back as well. Jim Lucchesi continued his roll, shaking off a crash in the final corner to hold 3rd on the stage, while visitors Zach Petersen and Vincent Kimble would take 2nd and 1st respectively only 2 seconds apart. The deep field kept the pressure on the top riders with TJ Tyrfingsson coming in 4th, Reilly Hohman in 5th and a very consistent Ryan “Blind Sender” Boardman coming in 6th.

Stage 4 followed the day’s longest transition, through the storm ravaged Jacoby Creek Trail corridor up the valley’s steep wall to the trail called Mud Pup. The dynamic trail witnessed many tight runs, but the times set by those more familiar with the trail were untouchable. In Masters Tony L. would followup his 3rd on Fern Trail with another 3rd on Stage 4, a trail of his cocreation. Shaun Fyfe would grab 2nd, while a still piping hot Mike Clem would rock down for his third consecutive stage win. Senior Men Steve Pearl, Jimmy Lucchesi and Reilly Hohman were in a league of their own on Mud Pup, with the rest of the field battling it out almost 20 seconds back. The three would stack themselves over a mere 3 seconds at the front, Pearl in 3rd, Jimmy in 2nd and Reilly Hohman with his first stage win of the day.

As the still energetic field made its way toward Stage 5 it was becoming evident the days trials were beginning to take their toll. Several riders had been forced to say good bye to go meet other obligations, and among those that remained many were cultivating a cold and distant gaze. Pampas would be the finally. Riders pushed straight up the upper half of the stage to understand what was in store. Steep berm slashing in near perfect dirt was waiting. In the Masters Rusty Hansen would recover form to claim 2nd, with Shaun Fyfe taking an unfortunate detour somewhere on track. Mike Clem would keep the magic alive winning the final stage and winning the day by more than two minutes over the rest of his cohort. The Senior Men’s day was up for grabs starting out Stage 5. Vincent Kimber would also take a wrong turn and sadly veer off track and out of the lead group. Reilly Hohman, a favorite on the stage, was fast off the line but had a hard crash right out of the gate on the trail’s steepest section, known as “3 Way”. Hohman would slowly pickup the pieces to finish the stage relatively OK, but would fall out of the top 10. Joel Graves put together his best stage of the day, gliding his 29″ rig into a solid 4th. Although not able to grab a second stage win on the day Jim Lucchesi would remain rock solid with a 3rd, just 0.2 seconds behind Zach Petersen in 2nd. Steve Pearl would win his first and only stage of the day on Stage 5, giving him a much needed boost in the final rankings.

We could not have asked for a better group and better spirits on this excellent adventure. The dirt was good, the trails were rad and the crew was awesome. Over 5 amazing stages the Masters top five were Shaun Fyfe, Bryan Stephens, Keith Reynolds, Rusty Hansen in 2nd and Mike Clem in 1st.  Ultimately the Senior Men’s top six over five stages would be filled with three local riders, but more notably three visiting riders. TJ Tyrfingsson and Ryan Boardman, who rode 4 out of 5 runs blind, very consistently worked themselves into 6th and 5th overall respectively. 4th overall would be local Justin Graves whose chainsaw had indeed sponsored several stages. 3rd was a Humboldt local whose speed is as reliable as the tides, the indomitable Steve Pearl. Visiting Zach Petersen would ace the day to finish a very impressive 2nd overall, having ridden 3 of 5 stages utterly blind and still being able to rise with the cream. However, none had a formula to counter the perpetual intensity of Jim Lucchesi, who would stand nearly 22 seconds above the nearest rider on the day. What a strong performance. Maybe it’s that Creek water.
